Tripindi Shradh in Trimbakeshwar

Tripindi Shradh is a one-day shradh done at Trimbakeshwar for the peace of ancestors of the last three generations. Three pinds – of barley, rice and til – are offered to Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It is done when the yearly shradh of ancestors has not been done for some years, or when their souls are believed to be without peace.

Meaning

What Is Tripindi Shradh?

Trimeans three
Pindmeans an offering of cooked grain

Tripindi Shradh is a shradh in which three pinds are offered for the peace of the ancestors of the last three generations of the family – on the father's side and the mother's side.

Every family is expected to do the yearly shradh for its ancestors. When this is not done for some years, or when an ancestor died young, suddenly, or with wishes left unfulfilled, it is believed that their soul may not be at peace. Tripindi Shradh is done to give them peace and to receive their blessings.

The three pinds are offered to the three forms of God – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh – who are asked to give peace to the ancestors.

Who Should Do Tripindi Shradh?

Tripindi Shradh is advised when the ancestors of the family have not received their shradh, or when the family feels their blessings are missing. Not every problem in life needs this puja – the family history and kundali are checked first.

Main reasons

The traditional reasons for doing Tripindi Shradh.

  • The yearly shradh was not done for three years or more.
  • The date of death (tithi) of an ancestor is not known.
  • An ancestor died young, suddenly, or before marriage.
  • An ancestor died with wishes left unfulfilled.
  • Pitru dosh has been found in the kundali.

Signs families often share

Problems that are commonly linked with ancestors who are not at peace.

  • Delay or repeated problems in marriage.
  • Delay in having children.
  • Quarrels and no peace at home.
  • Money losses, or work that does not grow.
  • Illness that keeps coming back in the family.
  • Seeing ancestors again and again in dreams.

Please note: these signs can also have many other reasons, so the puja is not decided from signs alone. In the kundali, astrologers look at the 9th house, the Sun, and Rahu and Ketu for pitru dosh. For health problems, always see a doctor.

Why Is Tripindi Shradh Done at Trimbakeshwar?

Tripindi Shradh can be done at a few holy places, but Trimbakeshwar is the best-known place for it. There is a special reason.

Three pinds, three faces of the Jyotirlinga

In Tripindi Shradh, the three pinds are offered to Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. At Trimbakeshwar, the Jyotirlinga itself has three small faces for Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. This is why the puja is believed to be most complete here.

  • Where the Godavari begins

The Godavari river begins at Brahmagiri hill in Trimbakeshwar. Pind daan and shradh at the source of a holy river are given great importance.

  • Kushavarta Kund

Families take a holy dip in the Kushavarta Kund before the shradh, as is done for all pujas for ancestors here.

  • Named in the texts

Texts on rituals such as the Dharmasindhu speak of doing shradh at a tirth, and Trimbakeshwar is one of the main tirths for pujas for ancestors.
