Pitra Dosh: Meaning, Symptoms & Nivaran Puja in Trimbakeshwar
Pitra Dosh (also called Pitru Dosh) is a dosh in the kundali linked with ancestors who are not at peace – for example when their shradh was not done, or when someone in the family died an untimely death. In the kundali it is seen mainly through the Sun, the 9th house and Rahu–Ketu. At Trimbakeshwar, it is removed with Tripindi Shradh, Narayan Nagbali or pind daan, depending on the cause.

Meaning
What Is Pitra Dosh?
Pitra means ancestors, and dosh means a fault. In Hindu belief, our ancestors (pitars) bless the family from the world of the ancestors. When their shradh and tarpan are not done, or when a soul in the family did not get peace, it is believed that their blessings do not reach the family. This is called Pitra Dosh.
The scriptures speak of three debts that every person carries:
Shradh, tarpan and pind daan are the ways to repay the Pitru Rin. Pitra Dosh is not a curse from the ancestors – it is better understood as a duty to them that is still unfinished.
Pitra Dosh is also written as Pitru Dosh, Pitri Dosh or Pitra Dosha. All of these mean the same.
What causes Pitra Dosh?
- 1Shradh not doneThe yearly shradh or tarpan of ancestors was not done for many years.
- 2Untimely death in the familyAn ancestor died suddenly, young, or in an accident, and the last rites were not complete.
- 3Unfulfilled wishesAn ancestor left the world with wishes that were not fulfilled.
- 4Disrespect to eldersAncestors or elders were not respected or cared for in their lifetime.
- 5Karma from the pastWrong deeds by someone in the family line, such as harming a snake or a living being.

How to Check Pitra Dosh in Your Kundali
In astrology, the Sun stands for the father and ancestors, and the 9th house stands for the father, ancestors and luck. Pitra Dosh is seen when these are troubled. These are the four signs astrologers look for.
Sun with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn
The Sun sits with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn in the same house, or is under their aspect. The Sun with Rahu is the most common sign.
Rahu or Ketu in the 9th house
Rahu or Ketu sits in the 9th house, the house of ancestors.
Lord of the 9th house is weak
The planet that rules the 9th house is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or is weak.
Sun and the 9th house both troubled
The Sun and the 9th house are both under bad influence at the same time.
The strength matters. One sign alone does not always mean strong Pitra Dosh. A pandit also looks at the strength of the Sun, the help of Jupiter, and the dasha running in your life before saying how strong it is and which puja is needed.
Signs
Symptoms of Pitra Dosh
These are the signs that families and astrologers most often link with Pitra Dosh. Having one or two of them does not mean you have the dosh. But when many of them are seen together, and especially when they run through more than one generation, the kundali and family history should be checked.
Delay in marriage
Marriages in the family get delayed, break at the last step, or face trouble after marriage.
Problems with children
Delay in having children, or repeated worries about the health and studies of children.
Fights in the family
Quarrels between family members, property disputes, or the family drifting apart.
Money does not stay
Steady losses, debts, or money that keeps going out in sudden expenses.
Work does not grow
Hard work without growth, or the same problem in jobs or business again and again.
Illness in the family
Illness that keeps coming back, or problems that pass from one generation to the next.
Ancestors in dreams
Seeing ancestors again and again in dreams, sometimes asking for food or water.
No peace at home
A heavy feeling at home, and things not going right despite everyone trying.
Please note: these signs can also have many other reasons. For any health problem, always see a doctor. A puja is a spiritual remedy and does not replace medical treatment.
When is it stronger? Astrologers say the effects of Pitra Dosh are felt more during the dasha of the Sun, Rahu or Ketu, and when the same problems are seen in more than one generation.

How do I know if I have Pitra Dosh?
Astrologers look for the Sun with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the 9th house, a weak lord of the 9th house, or the Sun and the 9th house both troubled. The family history is also checked, such as missed shradh or untimely deaths.

Which puja is best for Pitra Dosh?
It depends on the cause. Tripindi Shradh is done when the shradh of ancestors was missed or the death date is not known. Narayan Nagbali is done for an untimely death or harm to a snake. Pind daan and tarpan help in mild cases. All are done at Trimbakeshwar.
Is Pitra Dosh a curse from the ancestors?
No. Pitra Dosh is better understood as an unfinished duty to the ancestors, called Pitru Rin. Shradh, tarpan and pind daan are the ways to complete this duty and receive their blessings.
Can Pitra Dosh be removed?
The planetary signs in the kundali do not change, but families believe the effects of Pitra Dosh ease once the right puja is done for the ancestors and their yearly shradh is continued.
Where is Pitra Dosh nivaran puja done?
Pitra Dosh nivaran is mostly done at Trimbakeshwar, a Jyotirlinga temple about 28 km from Nashik in Maharashtra, where the Godavari river begins. Tripindi Shradh and Narayan Nagbali are done here with the full vidhi.

How long does Pitra Dosh last?
There is no fixed time. Astrologers say its effects are felt more during the dasha of the Sun, Rahu or Ketu. Families believe they ease after the right puja and the yearly shradh.
What is the difference between Pitra Dosh and Kaal Sarp Dosh?
Pitra Dosh is linked with the ancestors and is seen through the Sun and the 9th house. Kaal Sarp Dosh is formed when all seven planets sit on one side of Rahu and Ketu. A kundali can have both, and their pujas are different.
