What Is Rudrabhishek?

Rudraa name of Lord Shiva
Abhishekholy bath of the deity

Rudrabhishek is the most loved puja of Lord Shiva. The Shivling is bathed with holy liquids, one after another, while pandits chant the Rudra mantras. It is believed that Lord Shiva, as Rudra, is pleased quickly by abhishek, and blesses the family with peace and well-being.

The mantras come from the Yajurveda. In Maharashtra and North India, the Rudrashtadhyayi (Rudri) from the Shukla Yajurveda is chanted. In South India, the Sri Rudram – Namakam and Chamakam – from the Krishna Yajurveda is chanted. Both praise Shiva as Rudra.

Rudrabhishek can be done alone, or along with other pujas like Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja or Mahamrityunjay Jaap.

Puja vidhi

Rudrabhishek Vidhi – How It Is Done

Rudrabhishek follows a set Vedic vidhi. The family sits with the pandits and offers the abhishek with their own hands, as Guruji guides them.

  1. Holy dip and sankalp

After a holy dip in the Kushavarta Kund, Guruji takes the sankalp with the family's name, gotra and the reason for the puja.

  2. Ganesh and Navagraha puja

Lord Ganesh and the nine planets are worshipped first, so that the puja goes well.

  3. Shiva puja

Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati are invoked and worshipped with flowers, bel patra and dhoop.

  4. Abhishek with Rudri path

While the pandits chant the Rudrashtadhyayi, the Shivling is bathed with water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugarcane juice and panchamrit.

  5. Shringar

The Shivling is decorated with sandal paste, bel patra, flowers and rudraksha.

  6. Aarti and prasad

The puja ends with aarti and prayers. The abhishek water (tirth) and prasad are given to the family.
