About the Kumbh
What Is Simhastha Kumbh?
Simhastha is the Kumbh Mela held at Nashik and Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra. It is called Simhastha because it happens when Guru (Jupiter) is in Simha rashi (Leo). This comes once in about 12 years. The last Simhastha here was in 2015.
It is one of the four Kumbh Melas of India, along with Prayagraj, Haridwar and Ujjain. The holy river here is the Godavari, which begins at Brahmagiri hill in Trimbakeshwar and flows through Nashik.
The Kumbh is held at two places. The Vaishnava akharas take their holy bath at Ramkund in Nashik, and the Shaiva akharas bathe at the Kushavarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar. Many families believe that a dip in these holy waters and a puja during Simhastha bring special punya.

Nashik Kumbh Mela and Trimbakeshwar – What Is the Difference?
People often search for the "Nashik Kumbh Mela", but the Simhastha is held at two places on the Godavari: Nashik city and Trimbakeshwar, about 28 km apart. Here is what happens at each place.
Nashik – Ramkund & Panchavati
The Nashik side of the Kumbh is on the banks of the Godavari in the old city.
- Ramkund – the main bathing ghat. The Vaishnava akharas take their Amrit Snan here.
- Panchavati – the area linked with Lord Ram, with the Kalaram temple and Sita Gufa.
- Sadhugram – the camp area where sadhus and akharas stay during the Kumbh.
- Most hotels, the railway station and the airport are on the Nashik side.
Trimbakeshwar – Kushavarta Kund & Jyotirlinga
Trimbakeshwar is where the Godavari begins, at the foot of Brahmagiri hill.
- Kushavarta Kund – the holy tank. The Shaiva akharas take their Amrit Snan here.
- Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga – one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
- Brahmagiri hill – the source of the Godavari river.
- Kaal Sarp Puja, Narayan Nagbali and Tripindi Shradh are done here.
Coming for a puja? Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja, Narayan Nagbali and Tripindi Shradh are done in Trimbakeshwar, not in Nashik city. Many families stay in Nashik, take a holy dip at Ramkund, and come to Trimbakeshwar for the puja. Guruji helps you plan the day.
